The standard fee-saving advice is "trade more to reach the next VIP tier." We pulled the actual tier ladders to see what that takes. The answer, for almost everyone: the base tier is your fee. The first discount requires around $5M of monthly volume and barely moves the number, and cutting your taker fee in half takes hundreds of millions to a billion a month.
| VIP 1 | 30-day volume | or hold | Maker | Taker |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Binance | $5M | and ≥5 BNB | 0.018% | 0.050% |
| OKX | $5M | or ≥$100k assets | 0.016% | 0.045% |
| Bitget | $5M | or ≥$30k assets | 0.019% | 0.060% |
| KuCoin | $5M | or ≥1,000 KCS | 0.018% | 0.060% |
Read the taker column: at VIP 1, Binance's taker is still 0.05%, and Bitget's and KuCoin's are still 0.06% — unchanged from base. Only the maker fee improves, by 0.001–0.004 percentage points. On $5M of monthly maker volume, dropping from 0.020% to 0.018% saves $100 a month. You traded five million dollars to save a hundred. Note also Binance requires both the volume and a BNB balance; the others let a token or asset holding substitute for volume.
The taker fee is stubborn — it only falls meaningfully at the high tiers, which need serious size:
| To reach ~half the base taker | Tier | 30-day volume | Taker |
|---|---|---|---|
| Binance | VIP 5 | $1,000M | 0.027% |
| OKX | VIP 5 | $600M | 0.026% |
| Bitget | VIP 5 | $100M | 0.032% |
| KuCoin | VIP 5 | $60M | 0.048% |
Binance and OKX only get your taker from 0.05% to ~0.026% once you're doing $600M–$1B a month. KuCoin is the extreme case: its taker is flat at 0.06% all the way through VIP 3, and even at VIP 5 ($60M/month) it's only down to 0.048%. These are institutional volumes; a trader running $100k a month is nine tiers and several orders of magnitude away from any of it.
Tiers verified July 2026 from official fee pages/APIs (Binance, OKX, Bitget, KuCoin). Volume is 30-day; some venues also count spot/options volume, weighted. Schedules change — confirm on the exchange before relying on any figure.
We hold ourselves to publishing only officially-verified numbers, and for two venues we couldn't fully confirm the ladder. What we could verify points the same way. Bybit's taker steps down to 0.040% at VIP 1 and ~0.032% by VIP 4 (its volume thresholds we could not confirm on an official source, so we won't print them). Gate reaches its low tiers at much smaller volume — VIP 1 around $60k of combined 30-day volume — but its taker stays at 0.05% until VIP 3, and its maker figure is genuinely ambiguous between Gate's published schedule and its live API, so we won't quote a single number. Verify both live before acting.
Your base-tier cost on each venue is in the fee calculator; for most traders, that's the number that counts.
